Understand CAT 2019 Result
There are various terms that are related to CAT Result. So, clear the confusion by understanding the same.
It is an actual score of a candidate that is calculated according to the exam pattern. which means +3 for correct answers and -1 for incorrect answers. The maximum marks of the paper are 300.
Calculation of CAT raw Score :
(No. co correct answer x 3) – (No. of incorrect answers x 1 )
What is the Normalized or Scaled Score in CAT 2019?
As the CAT 2019 Exam conducts in multiple phases, there are chances that the difficulty level across the slots may vary. So, the exam conducting body scales the candidates’ score to maintain parity and fairness. In this process, student marks may increase or decrease. Normalization takes place in two phases ie section-wise and overall.
There is no one parameter to decide if the one slot is difficult than others. So, it is decided by the average scores.
Let’s say, in the first slot the average score of all students is 150 whereas in second it is 170. So, it is assumed that slot 2 was easy in comparison. Thus, the score of each student in the first slot shall be multiplied by 1.13 (170/150).
How is CAT Percentile calculated?
Based on the scaled score, the rank of the candidates is calculated which is further used for the calculation of the percentile score. This method was not revealed previously by the IIm’s but now notice has been published for Percentile calculation. Here are the steps that IIM uses to calculate your Percentile score using the rank.
Step 1. They take “N” as the no. candidates appeared for CAT 2019 in the morning and evening sessions.
Step 2. Now, as per the scaled score, the rank (r) is calculated.
In the case of two or more candidates obtaining same scaled scores will provide same ranks to all those candidates. For instance, suppose exactly two candidates obtain the highest scaled score, then both of those candidates are assigned a rank of 1. Moreover, the candidate(s) obtaining the second-highest scaled score are assigned a rank of 3 and so on.

Step 3. After that, they Calculate the Percentile Score by using the following “Formula “
𝑃 = [ ( 𝑁 − 𝑟 ) / 𝑁 ] x 100
- P = Percentile Score of the candidates
- N = Number of candidates appeared for the exam in moring and evening session
- r = Rank obtained with the help of Scaled Score
Step 4. Now, Round off the percentile score (P) up to two decimal points.
- All percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.995 are rounded off to 100,
- All percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.985 but strictly less than 99.995 are rounded off to 99.99 and so on.
