Admission Process in IITs For MBA programme
Various IITs shortlists candidates for admission on the basis of CAT score. Earlier, the IITs used to conduct their own entrance test, however, from the year 2011 onwards, they have started considering the score of CAT exam for admission in the MBA programme.
To be eligible to take admission in one of the IITs, one should have completed graduation in any discipline from a recognized university or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The score in CAT exam, performance in GD or PI or Writing Ability Test (WAT) will further be taken into consideration for the selection.

Department of Management Studies (DMS), IIT Delhi
The Department of Management Studies at IIT Delhi is ranked amongst the Top 10 B-schools in India. The IIT Delhi offers a two-year full-time MBA programme and a special program in Telecommunication Systems Management (MBA-Telecom). There are a total of 115 seats in DMS IITD, 91 in management and 24 in Telecommunication management. The tuition fees for Indian citizen is Rs. 8 Lacs for the entire MBA Full-Time Programme payable in equal installments (4 Semesters).
The placement status in IITD is excellent as the list of recruiters boasts of big names such as GE, Shell, Deloitte, Amazon, Google, etc. The highest CTC offered until now is Rs. 26.00 lakhs and the average CTC offered is 16.54 lakhs.
Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay (IITB)
Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSoM) at IIT Bombay offers admission in a Two-Year Full-time Master of Management (M.Mgt) Program. There are a total of 120 seats in the M.Mgt program. To be eligible to apply for M.Mgt in SJMSoM, a candidate is required to have a four year Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in any discipline with first class or 60 percent marks in aggregate. Furthermore, a minimum CAT percentile of 98.5 or more acts as the next step for qualification. The finally shortlisted candidates are called for WAT and PI for final selection during the admission process.
The tuition fee for the Masters of Management program at IITB is 8.30 lakh. IITB has a 100% placement record and an average placement salary of 17.62 LPA.
Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur (IIT KGP)
Vinod Gupta School of Management was the first management school in any IIT in the country, which further layed the foundation of quality management education on which the other IITs grew. The total tuition fee of MBA at IIT Kharagpur is Rs 3.36 lakh per annum, i.e. Rs. 6.72 lakhs for the entire PG course. To be eligible for MBA program in IIT Kharagpur, the candidates need to possess a Bachelor of Engineering or Technology degree or Master in Science/Commerce/Economics degree (with Mathematics or Statistics at Bachelor’s level).
The General candidates must have secured a minimum of 60% marks in their graduation, or else a CGPA of 6.5 on a 10 point scale. As far as the CAT score is concerned, one should have obtained more than 90%. In the final round, shortlisted candidates have to appear for WAT and PI rounds
The average salary during the recruitment season last year was Rs. 15.61 LPA. Since 25 years, Vinod Gupta School of Management has maintained its position at 7th spot for Management category for the 2nd consecutive year as per NIRF Ranking.
Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IITM)
The management program at IIT Madras is run by the Department of Management Studies (DoMS). The IITM offers standard Master of business administration degree with a seat total of 68. It will cost you INR 7 lakh to study MBA from IIT- Madras. The average salary of an IITM MBA graduate is 11 LPA.
To apply at IITM, one should have completed graduation in any discipline and possess a first class division or 60 percent marks. However, other factors like CAT score, previous academic performance, and work experience are further taken into consideration for shortlisting candidates. It has been observed that a minimum CAT percentile of 96% is needed to make it into the shortlist.
Indian Institute of Technology – Roorkee
The Department of Management Studies in IIT Roorkee offers admission in a two-year full-time MBA Program. There are a total of 95 number of seats to offer at IIT Roorkee. The programme at IIT Roorkee will cost you Rs. 8 lakh and offers dual specialization in the areas of Information Technology, Finance, Marketing, Operations and Human Resource management.
Candidates only from certain disciplines such as B. Tech., B. Sc. Engineering, B.E. or B. Arch. (having Mathematics in Class XII) are welcome to apply for the management programme at IITK. Also, they must possess a minimum aggregate of 60 percent in their graduation from any recognized institute.
Initial short listing of candidates will be done on the basis of their performance in CAT. A final merit is prepared on the basis of their aggregate performance in CAT with 94.6+ percentile being the minimum percentile, followed by Group Discussion, Interview, and their Work Experience as per respective weightage given below:
- CAT Percentile – 65 percent
- Group Discussions – 10 percent
- Personal Interview – 20 percent
- Work experience – 5 percent
The average package of placed students from IIT Roorkee MBA program is 9.18 LPA.
Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) – Dhanbad
ISM Dhanbad is the most recent addition and the first amongst the alleged ‘New IITs’ to offer a management program under its Department of Management Studies. It offers a Two-Year MBA Programme with specializations offered in Marketing, Finance, Human Resource and Systems and Operations Management costing Rs. 3.4 lakhs. While the fee of MBA from IIT Dhanbad may seem paltry, there are only 62 coveted seats in this program.
To be eligible, the candidates should have secured minimum 50% marks in graduation from a recognized University. The candidate should also have to have a minimum CAT percentile of 80 – 85% to be eligible for admission to the management program. The shortlisted candidates are further called for group discussions and personal interviews as part of the final selection for MBA programme at IIT Dhanbad. The average salary package offered is Rs. 8.00 LPA.
