What Is CMAT?

Before we even proceed to know what National Testing Agency is or how it works, let’s get our basics right. The full form of CMAT is the Common Management Admission Test and it is a national level entrance test. Since the year 2018, it was being held by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) every year. CMAT is a computer-based test of 03 hours duration which is held in single session only. For CMAT you need to prepare topics like Quantitative Technique, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension and General Awareness. The score for CMAT is used for admission in various AICTE-Approved Institutions/University Departments/Constituent Colleges/Affiliated Colleges for MBA programme.

Now, that you know what the entrance test, let us know what is NTA?

What is NTA?

The National Testing Agency (NTA) was approved by the Union Cabinet in November 2017 for conducting various entrance examinations. This year NTA is given the responsibility for conducting few of the major entrance examinations from each stream. For example, in Engineering stream, it will conduct JEE Main, then in Medical, it is conducting NEET (UG), in Management, it is CMAT, and in College/ University Teaching & Fellowship it will conduct UGC NET.

So, one thing is clear the major entrance tests which were earlier being covered by CBSE or AICTE are now being conducted by NTA.

All the entrance tests which are under NTA will be held in Online mode, i.e., it will be computer based. To ensure that every student gets equal opportunity, it will establish a network of test practice centers for students of rural areas.

Major Changes in CMAT 2019 by NTA

So with the new exam conducting body, will there will be any change in the exam pattern or syllabus of the entrance test? No, in CMAT 2019 there are no major changes which will surprise you. Since CMAT never had any defined syllabus, one of the biggest worry of the candidate, i..e, change in the syllabus is off the table.

The NTA has announced that it will not change the following for CMAT 2019:

  1. Syllabus
  2. Exam pattern
  3. Application fee
  4. Language of the examination

The next biggest question is that should you change your preparation strategy for CMAT 2019?

How To Prepare For CMAT 2019?

Many students have been asking this question, now that NTA will conduct CMAT 2019, should they change their preparation strategy or how should they prepare for CMAT 2018, now that it is being held by NTA?

Well, the simplest answer possible to this question is that you don’t have to change your preparation strategy. There is still the same number of topics to prepare as there was last year. The only difference shall be in the difficulty level of the entrance test. This is highly unpredictable because NTA is a new exam conducting authority and will be conducting CMAT for the first time. So, nothing can be said about this. But you can check the preparation tips for CMAT 2019 to prepare yourself for the test:

CMAT 2019 Preparation Tips

  • Though there is no defined syllabus for CMAT, you can refer to the CAT Syllabus for the preparation. These are the same topics which you have to study for CMAT as there are in CAT. However, the only difference is that you have to prepare one extra topic for CMAT which is GK.
  • Another thing which you need to understand is that to score well in the exam you don’t need to attempt all the questions and get full marks. A score of approximately 300 is enough to score 99 percentile. But the task of securing 300 marks out of 400 will be tough.
  • In the CMAT exam, it is not how many questions you answer, it is more about the accuracy. Since there is a negative marking in the entrance test, hence attempting all the questions without being confident will affect your score. It is better to attempt a few and score 80+ percentile than to attempt all and not qualify the entrance test.
  • In the CMAT exam, the General Awareness section can be a game changer. Many candidates appearing for the exam ignore this section. Attempting questions from GK section can make you a tough competitor and help you score high in CMAT 2019.
